Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to remove kidney stones that are too large to pass through the urinary tract. During the procedure, a small incision is made in the back and a nephroscope is passed through the skin and into the kidney to locate and remove the stones. This procedure is often recommended when other treatments have been unsuccessful in removing the stones or when the stones are causing severe pain or complications.

Kidney Stones
How it is Done

Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat large kidney stones. During the procedure, a small incision is made in the back, and a nephroscope is inserted to locate and remove the stones from the kidney. Patients can expect to be under general anesthesia during the surgery and may need to stay in the hospital for a day or two for observation. After the procedure, patients may experience some discomfort and pain in the back, as well as blood in the urine. It is normal to have a ureteral stent placed to help with urine drainage, which may cause some temporary urinary symptoms. Most patients can resume their normal activities within a week but should follow their doctor’s instructions for post-operative care and recovery.

What to expect during a Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy procedure involves being placed under anesthesia while a surgeon makes a small incision in your back to access the kidney. A nephroscope is then used to locate and remove the kidney stones. You may experience some discomfort and soreness after the procedure, which can be managed with pain medications. It is normal to see blood in your urine for a few days and you may also have a urinary catheter for a brief period. Recovery time varies, but most people are able to resume normal activities within a week. It is important to follow your doctor’s post-operative instructions carefully to ensure a successful recovery.
