 RIRS

RIRS (Retrograde IntraRenal Surgery), is a minimally invasive procedure used for kidney stone removal. It involves the use of a small scope that is passed through the urinary tract to locate and break up the kidney stones using laser or sound waves.

Kidney Stones
How it is done

During a RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery) for kidney stone removal, a thin scope is inserted through the urethra and bladder into the ureter and kidney. Once the scope reaches the kidney where the stone is located, a laser fiber is used to break the stone into smaller pieces. These smaller stone pieces are then removed using a small basket-like device or flushed out through the urinary tract. This minimally invasive procedure is performed under general anesthesia and typically does not require any incisions. RIRS is an effective technique for treating kidney stones, with a shorter recovery time compared to traditional surgery methods. It is often preferred for patients with smaller stones or those who are not good candidates for other procedures.

After undergoing a RIRS surgery for kidney stone removal, patients can expect a minimally invasive procedure with a shorter recovery time compared to traditional surgery. The procedure typically takes about 1 to 2 hours and is performed under general anesthesia. Patients may experience mild discomfort, blood in the urine, and frequent urination after the surgery, which is normal and should improve within a few days. It is common for patients to resume normal activities within a few days to a week post-surgery, but strenuous activities should be avoided for a few weeks. Follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor recovery and ensure the successful removal of kidney stones. In most cases, patients can expect relief from symptoms related to kidney stones and improved kidney function after the procedure.
